HR Head VS CHRO.
Updated: Apr 5

Most people don’t know the difference between an HR Head and a CHRO.
But CEOs do.
Boards do.
An HR Head is critical.
A CHRO is indispensable.
Here’s the difference and it has nothing to do with years of experience.
HR HEAD → Runs the function
• Leads HR operations
• Delivers processes & compliance
• Implements the people agenda
• Supports business needs
• Manages reports, cycles & issues
• Solves today’s problems
CHRO → Shapes the organisation
• Influences business strategy
• Anticipates future talent & capability risks
• Designs the leadership architecture for scale
• Coaches and challenges the CEO
• Uses culture as a business lever
• Navigates power, politics & succession
• Shapes tomorrow’s organisation while running today’s
Most HR Heads think:
“Once HR is fixed, then I’ll be strategic.”
But the CHRO role doesn’t start after the fires are out.
It starts with how you think today.
A CHRO is not a functional head.
A CHRO is a business leader through the people lens.
That’s why CEOs rely on them in board discussions, crises, restructures, acquisitions, turnarounds, and succession decisions.
You don’t grow into the CHRO role because you’ve done HR for long.
You grow into it when you shift from:
managing HR → reshaping how the business works through people.
